Respect for Shopworkers Week

Sharing is caring!

I visited the Co-op store in Edgeley during Respect for Shopworkers Week (11 – 15th November) to talk to staff about how they work with the police and the local community to tackle retail crime.

The 2013 survey from USDAW, the union which represents retail staff, showed that 4% of shopworkers had been physically assaulted and 34% had been the victims of verbal abuse in the previous twelve months.

I recently sponsored a Parliamentary Early Day Motion condemning incidents of abuse, threats and violence which are directed at shopworkers, and calling for a change in the law to give greater protection to all workers who serve the public.

Shopworkers are serving the public all day long, and should be treated with respect by customers, even at the busiest times of the year. I am glad that employers like The Co-operative are joining with USDAW to make the workplace safer for their staff.
