Stockport Express Column – June 2016

Sharing is caring!

I have been listening to your views about the referendum on our membership of the European Union, which is on 23rd June.

It seems clear that, despite all the arguments for and against, many people are still looking for an answer and haven’t made up their mind. People have said to me that there are so many conflicting statistics about the impact of either leave or remain on the economy, that they are left none the wiser.

Many of the issues raised like the NHS and education are the responsibility of the Conservative government. Coming out of the EU won’t change those policies!

I will be voting to remain in the EU as membership means that we can sell our goods freely to other EU countries. This means that multinational companies will invest in this country and that means jobs. If we were outside the EU the UK would not be so attractive as extra tariffs would be imposed by Europe making it more difficult to sell our goods.

We need migrant workers and that will continue to be the case even if we leave the EU, unless we want to do without the services migrant workers provide.

And in a global economy problems have to be solved internationally and outside the EU we would lose the influence of being part of that influential group of countries.

Of course I don’t know what the impact of leaving the EU will have on the UK, but I do know that it will be huge. This will be truly a monumental decision.

I can understand voting to leave if you are convinced that the UK will be better off outside the EU.

However, if you’re not sure, think of yourself as standing at the edge of a precipice. Would you jump off if you were not sure where you would land?

My advice is if you are not really sure that this is the best thing for our country and for the next generation, then think twice before jumping! Vote to Remain.
