Stockport MP Ann Coffey met stallholders at Stockport market on the first day of this year’s national Love your Local Market Fortnight.
Love Your Local Market is now in its third year, and is being celebrated by markets all around the country. Ann Coffey, who is the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Markets, said:
“Love your Local Market is a great way to show people what Stockport Market has to offer. Building on the work of the market traders and support from the Council, we are now combining our traditional market with the specialist markets and food events. It all adds up to a great markets experience”.
During her visit Ann met Zoe Simpson from Dragonfly Blooms, who set up her flower stall a year ago, with the support of “First Pitch”, the start up scheme run by the National Market Traders Federation. Zoe, whose stall in is the historic Market Hall, said:
“Starting my own flower stall was a big step, but in the first year I’ve been surprised by how many weddings I’ve been asked to design flowers for, which is always a great pleasure.”
Ann Coffey hosted and spoke at the national launch of Love Your Local Markets 2014 at the House of Commons, which was attended by over 100 MPs, leading figures from the Markets industry, and the Minister for High Streets, Town Centres and Markets Brandon Lewis MP, who praised the contribution of markets to supporting town centres and providing a base for new businesses to grow.
